A CONVERSATION WITH GRACE THOMPSON
How do you see your role as an Arc'teryx ambassador contributing to building a sense of community within the outdoor sports enthusiasts?
“As an Arc'teryx ambassador, my role is crucial in contributing to the sense of community within outdoor sports enthusiasts. I see myself as a visual representation of a dialogue between the brand and various communities, particularly the LGBTQ+ community and female athletes. Through panels, events, and runs, I strive to embody the inclusive aspect of Arc'teryx.”
“One specific initiative I've been involved in is organizing yoga events for breast cancer awareness, partnering with a therapist to provide a holistic approach to health. Additionally, I've participated in panels focused on climbing and supported other ambassadors in their initiatives, such as organizing a Juneteenth trail run and coordinating climbing trips. These activities aim to reduce barriers to entry and encourage more people to get moving, fostering a dialogue within the community.”
Outdoor sports are often seen as more than just a hobby but as a lifestyle. How has your personal journey in outdoor sports evolved into a lifestyle for you?
“I've always found solace and freedom in being outdoors—it's like a haven for me. What started as a hobby, soon became a lifestyle as I delved deeper into outdoor sports. I began as a runner, but over time, I found myself drawn to other activities like climbing, biking, paddling, and hiking. These outdoor pursuits aren't just about physical activity; they've become a training ground for my professional life, embodying the purpose I strive for as a personal trainer.”
“My purpose now is to help people live and move better in the present, here and now. Each outdoor adventure is not just about the activity itself but about the experience and the lessons it teaches us.”
How can individuals find and connect with supportive communities within the outdoor sports space?
“For those looking to connect with supportive communities within the outdoor sports space, I recommend seeking out local groups where you feel comfortable and seen. Whether it's a hiking club or a climbing gym, finding like-minded individuals can make all the difference. Additionally, checking out brands that are doing a good job and attending their local events can be a great way to network and learn more about the outdoors. If you're unsure where to start, the Arc'teryx Academy is an excellent resource for learning about outdoor activities and proper gear. Having mentors and experts in the field can also provide valuable guidance as you embark on your outdoor journey.”
The outdoors is often associated with physical well-being. How do you think outdoor sports contribute to mental health, and what conversations can the community foster to destigmatize mental health challenges within these spaces?
“Outdoor sports contribute significantly to mental health by providing a therapeutic escape from the stresses of daily life. The outdoors offers a space to be fully present, to listen to ambient sounds, and to feel connected to the elements. It's not just about short-term performance but about finding a balance that allows for long-term well-being. The community can foster conversations that destigmatize mental health challenges by emphasizing that life is the ultimate race, and being able to move long-term is the goal.”
With advancements in technology and gear, how do you see innovation shaping the future of outdoor sports, and what role can the community play in embracing and influencing these changes?
“I believe that managing mass production while catering to the individual's specific needs and fit is key. One way the brand is embracing this is through is Arc'teryx system of dress, where designers seek feedback from consumers to continually improve and "chase the perfect fit." This system allows the brand to evolve from the traditional approach where few body types were often considered the standard.
Another aspect of innovation is focusing on durability. By creating products that are built to last, we not only reduce waste but also ensure that outdoor enthusiasts can rely on their gear for years to come.”
How do you think you play a more active role in environmental advocacy and sustainability?
“In terms of environmental advocacy and sustainability, I believe it's important for individuals to take an active role in preserving our outdoor spaces. This can be as simple as picking up trash outside with a vest and gloves, leaving the space better than we found it. Being good stewards of these spaces allows others to enjoy them as well.”
